Pradaxa Side Effects and Symptoms
Pradaxa’s most serious side effect is internal bleeding which has been fatal in undiagnosed patients where the bleeding was not found in a timely manner. Symptoms of Pradaxa bleeding include:
- Lethargy
- Unusual bruising or bleeding
- Pink or brown urine
- Red or black tarry stools
- Coughing up blood
- Vomiting that resembles blood or looks like coffee grounds
- Bleeding from the gums
- Frequent nosebleeds
- Joint pain or swelling
- Headaches
- Dizziness
- Weakness and swelling of the arms, hands, feet, ankles or lower legs.
- Death
Bleeding is also a side effect of older blood thinners, like warfarin. But warfarin bleeding can be treated with vitamin K. There is no antidote available for bleeding caused by Pradaxa and similar drugs, known as direct thrombin inhibitors.
Pradaxa Bleeding Warnings and Investigations
In August 2011, regulators in Japan – where Pradaxa is sold as Prazaxa – ordered the drug’s maker, Boehringer Ingelheim, to issue a warning for potentially fatal bleeding after 81 of the almost 64,000 mainly elderly patients taking it there suffered heavy bleeding. Five of those patients died. The Japanese health ministry also said a lower dose may have to be given to certain patient groups, such as those over 70 or with kidney damage.
In September 2011, an investigation was opened in New Zealand after as many as five elderly Pradaxa patients reportedly died as a result of internal bleeding. Another 36 patients reportedly suffered bouts of serious internal bleeding. Some families of the New Zealand victims said their family members became ill when they switched from warfarin to Pradaxa.
What is Pradaxa?
Pradaxa (dabigatran etexilate) is a blood thinner that was approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in October 2010 to prevent blood clots in patients with atrial fibrillation. It is considered a safer blood thinner than warfarin because it does not interact with certain foods like that medication does.
