FDA Warns Of High Grade Prostate Cancer
In June 2011 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, prompted by 2 large studies, began requiring that new warnings be added to the labels of Propecia, ProScar, AvoDart, Jalyn and other such drugs. The warning states that men taking the drugs face an increased risk of developing high grade prostate cancer. This is an aggressive form of the disease and much more dangerous than the enlarged prostate that many of these drugs are prescribed to treat.
Health Canada Warns of Male Breast Cancer
In August 2011 Health Canada issued an alert warning of increased cases of male breast cancer in patients taking Propecia, ProScar and other finastrides.
What are Finasterides, Dutasterides and 5-Alpha Inhibitors?
Finasterides and other 5-alpha inhibitors are drugs commonly used to treat a urological disorder known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and baldness in men. BPH produces an enlarged prostate and difficulty with urination. The drugs function by prohibiting the production of androgen. The limiting of androgen, however, produces the side effects of erectile dysfunction, low libido and depression. New research is showing that these effects may not be reversible once men stop taking the drug. According to the FDA approximately 5 million men were prescribed these drugs between 2002 and 2009.
Manufacturers of 5-Alpha Inhibitors include:
- Merck
- GlaxoSmithKline
